The garage door keypad is one of the most convenient and secure features of modern garage door systems. Instead of relying on a traditional key or remote, homeowners can enter a simple code to open and close their garage doors.

This is especially helpful when your hands are full with groceries, kids, or tools, and it adds an extra layer of security to your home.

Why a Garage Door Keypad Is Important

A garage door keypad offers several benefits:

  • Convenience: Open your garage hands-free without fumbling for a key or remote.

  • Security: Program a unique PIN code that only your family knows, keeping intruders out.

  • Safety for kids & pets: Prevent accidental access by children or unauthorized individuals.

  • Easy guest access: Provide a code to friends, family, or service providers without giving out a physical key.

Why You Should Reset Your Garage Door Keypad Code

Resetting your garage door keypad code is essential for security and peace of mind. Here’s why:

  1. New home security – If you’ve just moved in, change the keypad code immediately. You never know who might have the old code.

  2. Forgotten codes – Resetting helps if you or family members can’t remember the current code.

  3. Protect your family – Prevent children from accidentally opening the garage door and wandering outside.

  4. Code theft prevention – Codes can be seen by strangers or neighbors. Resetting every 6–12 months ensures ongoing protection.

  5. Troubleshooting keypad issues – Sometimes, a keypad stops working because it loses connection with the opener. Resetting often solves this.

👉 Pro Tip: Always change your keypad code after allowing contractors, cleaners, or temporary visitors to access your garage.

Check New LiftMaster Keypad Compatibility First

For new Keypads Before you attempt to reset or program your keypad for the first time, it’s important to make sure the model you have is compatible with your garage door opener.

LiftMaster uses different technologies depending on the year and model of your opener:

  • Billion Code (1993–1995)

  • Security+ (1996–2005)

  • Security+ 315MHz (2006–2014)

  • Security+ 2.0 (2011–2021)

  • Security+ 2.0+ (2022 and newer)

Each keypad model works with certain opener generations only.

👉 Refer to the official LiftMaster Accessory Compatibility Chart (see images below) to verify your keypad model works with your opener before programming:

  • Chart 1: Remote controls & wireless keypads

  • Chart 2: Control panels & myQ accessories

If your opener is an older model, you may need a universal keypad like the LiftMaster 878MAX, which is designed to work with multiple technologies.

🔹 Method 1: Change Your Keypad PIN Code

Use this if your keypad works but you just want to update the PIN.

  1. Locate the “Learn” button on your garage door opener (usually on the back or side; it may be red, yellow, purple, or orange).

  2. Press and release the Learn button once. The LED next to it will light up and stay on for about 30 seconds.

  3. Within those 30 seconds, go to your keypad and enter your new 4–8 digit code.

  4. Press and hold the Enter button until the opener light blinks.

    • The blinking light means the new code has been saved.

  5. Test your keypad by entering the new PIN and verifying the garage door opens and closes.

✅ This keeps your remotes and other accessories working—only the keypad PIN changes.

🔹 Method 2: Factory Reset (Erase All Codes)

Use this if your keypad isn’t working, you moved into a new home, or you want to wipe out all stored codes and remotes.

  1. Press and hold the Learn button on the opener for about 6–10 seconds until the LED light turns off.

    • This erases all remotes, keypads, and MyQ devices connected to the opener.

  2. Release the button.

  3. Reprogram your remotes and keypad by repeating the steps from Method 1.

✅ This gives you a fresh start if you’re worried about old codes being compromised.

Troubleshooting LiftMaster Keypads

If your LiftMaster keypad is not working, try:

  • Replacing the batteries.

  • Resetting the keypad code.

  • Ensuring the opener’s antenna is hanging straight down.

  • Checking for worn-out or weather-damaged buttons.

If these steps don’t help, your keypad or opener may need repair or replacement.
